The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) is the only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. The CMI has been backing professional managers for more than 60 years and now has over 86,000 members. BAe systems is a global company defence and security company with approximately 100,000 employees worldwide. The CMI report that BAe Systems have now embedded the CMI top qualification, Chartered Manager status, as an essential part of their training and development programme. In addition, BAe Systems reported that the response for CMI courses at other levels has been overwhelming with 18 students lined up for CMI Level 5 and a further 14 student lined up for CMI Level 7.
Jamie Gilchrist, who succesfully obtained Chartered Management status, said: “The additional confidence this qualification gives you is demonstrated in how we perform our duties, and people joining the course have seen how we have stepped up.”
Kingston Hospital in London supports approximately 320,000 residents in the surrounding area and directly employs more than 2,600 staff. The hospital is currently going through a number of significant organisational changes and it is therefore important for managers at the hospital to be able to handle change and communicate with stakeholders effectively.
Kingston Hospital works with Kingston College in London to provide CMI courses for its staff. Since 2008, approximately 40 individuals have completed CMI courses, with an enthusiastic uptake from junior managers reported.
The Training Manager at Kingston Hospital was particularly impressed by the CMI course offered by Kingston College: “The type of skills we need our staff to have include good communication, a well rounded understanding of the organisation and its goals, the ability to form strong relationships with fellow team members and an understanding of the importance of trust and transparency, when managing change. The BGL Group is the UKs largest privately owned personalised insurance company. BGL arrange and administer insurance for 3.5 million customers and employ more than 3,000 people.
The Associate Director for HR at BGL reported that learning and development at BGL was not aligned to group strategy and that there were low levels of employee engagement. In an attempt to rectify this situation she proposed a pathway for management development using CMI qualifications.
BGL found that employee engagement rose dramatically following the CMI course and that there was the added benefit that all employees have chosen to stay with BGL.
